Abstract
Background and purpose
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a global public health problem, with adverse
outcomes of kidney failure, Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), and premature death.
CKD is a common chronic disease affecting an estimated 40 million U.S. adults today,
and millions of people are at increased risk for CKD. According to EKHA (European
Kidney Health Alliance) currently, 1 in 10 Europeans has Chronic Kidney
Disease (CKD) and it is predicted to be the fifth leading cause of death worldwide
by 2040. Particularly the End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) continues to be a disease
process with a high rate of hospitalization and mortality. There has been some innovation
in nephrology over decades but nothing compared to the advances generated
by the Information and communication technology (ICT) interventions in
other areas like Cardiology and Oncology fields.
